The Skinny Jean is Spawning Again

The Skinny Jean is considered a relic of a bygone age. This tight-fitted and tapered jean has remained dormant- but is spawning once more. This is a post on how to embrace the impending new take on the skinny jean…

CORMIO S/S 2023

The Skinny Jean: the faux pas or the way forward?

Tight fitted and tapered at the bottom of the leg and lined with spandex for a ‘super-slim fit’- the Skinny Jean is seemingly extinct from collections, closets and cloakrooms.

Slim-fit pants that were fitted like breeches arose in popularity for men in the Regency era in the early 19th century, and saw decline by the 1890s when baggier “Oxford” trousers displaced the slim-fit trouser in popularity. The slim-fitted trouser was historically shunned from society as the skinny jean has been today.

However, the Skinny Jean is spawning again. Yet this return to the clothes rack won’t be blatant and instead will be incognito in differing forms. Whether disguising as a Capri, camouflaging with a pair of boots or impersonating a straight-leg jean/leggings, the skinny jean’s comeback can be embraced rather than erased.

Below is a collection of inspiration for how to style and incorporate this tighter fitting jean into your wardrobe…

The Capri is IN

Dolce & Gabbana S/S 2002

Cormio S/S 2023

I really love a Capri trouser, I think this style is the perfect starter to wearing tight-fitting jeans again. I like this archive D&G Capri pant and how it’s styled casually for a sort of ballerina-off-duty look .The Cormio S/S 23 Capri emulates the sort of of Regency breech that was worn by the trendy mentioned earlier in the 19th century, except in 2023 it’d be paired with a kitten heel and worn in a nightclub smoking area.

The Skinny Jeans & Boots Combo

Celine F/W 2023

Kate Moss

Is she wearing a skinny jean under that high boot? The jean and boot combo is an ideal starter for a tight-fitted silhouette, without actually wearing a full-blown skinny jean on display. Celine did this in their F/W23 collection (which I talk more about on Instagram), every look on the runway that cheekily hinted to a skinny jean return, was worn with boots.

There is something quite strutty and supermodel-y about this combination. Don’t think dated, think of Natalia Vodianova in Paris for fashion week in 2010. I can imagine a skinny jean and boot combo would make one want to strut down the pavement with a little more presence than usual, like Kate Moss pictured above.

Slim-Fitted but Straight-Legged

Victoria Beckham

As mentioned before, the skinny jean’s return won’t be a flagrant one. The easiest step before the ultimate tight-fitted and spandex skinny, is the straight-legged trouser. Just as tight-fitted (as noted by Beckham), except the bottom of the leg isn’t tapered.

Below I’ve attached some fashion finds to ease your way into a skinny jean re-birth…
